The Folly - garden studio clad in Western Red Cedar shingles

The Folly

Set within a deep London garden, The Folly is a standalone studio space that draws on the materiality and atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest. Clad entirely in Western Red Cedar shingles, the building was designed to feel rooted in its landscape — an organic counterpoint to the Victorian terraces that surround it.

The form is deliberately simple, allowing the materials to be the focal point of the design. Cedar shingles weather naturally over time, shifting from warm amber to silver grey, allowing the building to settle quietly into the garden rather than compete with it. Inside, the material palette continues the theme: natural timber, exposed grain, and carefully placed openings that frame the planting beyond.

The result is a workspace that feels removed from the city while sitting squarely within it — a building that rewards attention to craft and the slow beauty of honest materials.
